Network Rail
Network Rail Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme
Britain relies on rail. Every day Network Rail gets 3 million people to
their destination and thousands of tonnes of goods moved around the country.
Rail is a greener and safer mode of transport so it's no surprise that our
railway has seen passenger numbers increase more than 40% in the past decade
alone. These numbers are expected to double by 2034.That means we have to run
more trains, more often and more efficiently. And we need even more talented
people on board to efficiently handle that challenge. Join our Advanced
Apprenticeship Scheme and very soon you could be doing a critical job within
our business.
Our Apprenticeship programme runs across five different areas -
Electrification & Plant, Overhead Line, Signalling, Telecoms and Track.
Whichever route you choose to take, you'll spend your first year in the
training centre at HMS Sultan, in Gosport, Hampshire. This is where you'll learn
the basics of your profession, working towards an NVQ2 and BTEC through a mix
of academic work and hands-on practical experience. For your second and third
years, you'll join an engineering maintenance team in your chosen London
location and get out and about with experienced colleagues.
While you're based on site, you'll also be working towards an NVQ3 in
Railway Engineering. On top of this, you'll be going back to HMS Sultan to
attend rail-specific technical courses and leadership training, to prepare you
for a career at the top of your profession.
You’ll need a minimum of four GCSEs A-C / four Scottish Standard 1-3,
or equivalent. These have to include English, Maths and Science or Engineering.
We’ll accept a relevant BTEC / NVQ level 2 and above to replace Science or
Engineering.
You don’t need to have studied engineering previously as we’ll teach
you everything you need to know.

Network Rail welcomes applications from a diverse range of candidates
regardless of background, disability or gender and is committed to creating a
workforce as diverse as the communities we serve.

The programme is run in conjunction with Keits Training Services where
apprentices will undertake NPTC Level 2 Diploma in work based
horticulture, key skills and one legislative or occupational test. Suitable
candidates possessing a level 2 qualification will progress to an Advanced
Apprenticeship (Level 3 Diploma).
How does it work
Apprentices are employed directly by John O’Conner. You will work
on contracts learning landscape and horticultural techniques at our assigned
depots. This will involve undertaking maintenance works on parks,
highways, housing, cemetery and school sites. You will receive training
from Keits Training Services which involves all aspects of plant maintenance,
cultivation and landscape development. You will also learn about pest control
through chemical, biological and cultural methods, operation and maintenance of
a wide range of machinery and soil science. Starting salary is dependent on
age, skills, and experience. Own transport is desirable as you will
need to travel to depots. Travel costs will be reimbursed.
How much will I be paid
Level 2 intermediate Apprentices will be paid at a rate of £152.00 per
week during their first year
Level 3 advanced Apprentices will be paid at a rate of £200.00 per week
during their first year
After the first year in your Apprenticeship you will move on to age
banded salary scales.
Who should apply?
Candidates should work well as part of a team, be committed to learning,
ambitious and interested in horticulture. Ideally, applicants will hold at
least five GCSEs at Grade A to C, preferably in Maths, English and Science and
will have an interest in horticulture. Due to the way the Apprenticeship is
funded applicants must have residency status, and we cannot accept applications
from holders of degree-level qualifications and above. Full, clean
driving licence desirable.
How do I apply?
If you would like to apply for the 2014 Apprentice Programme please
contact Martine Dorrington 01438 717175. If you are not a suitable
Apprenticeship applicant, you may wish to consider applying for our Traineeship
programme.
What happens at the end of my Apprenticeship?
John O’Conner aims to develop future team leaders, supervisors and
managers. Successful candidates who demonstrate the necessary attributes
will be offered the opportunity to progress to an Advanced or Higher
Apprenticeship.
