HOW THE SCHEME WORKS AND WHAT YOU’LL GET

Our Apprentice programme is run in partnership with CITB, the Sector Skills Council for construction. It mixes college study with practical on-site training with experienced trade specialists, and a programme that goes well beyond the standard syllabus.

Once you’re accepted, you’ll start a two year structured Intermediate Apprenticeship. You’ll learn on the job, and in a locally approved college – and you’ll be earning all the time. At the end of the two years, you’ll have loads more experience and valuable job skills, plus a technical certificate and nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification. And that’s just the beginning. Once you’ve completed your first 2 years, there are plenty more options available to you, if you’re ambitious as we think you are you’ll probably want to continue for a further year with our Advanced Apprenticeship .

Please note: the timescales are slightly longer if you are training to be a plumber or electrician, or are training towards an SVQ in Scotland.

SUMMARY OF THE ROLE

You’ll gain a nationally recognised qualification through on and off the job, trade specific training.

WHAT WILL I BE RESPONSIBLE FOR?

·         To complete Barratt Training Manual

·         To work with Work Based Recorder to learn and develop trade skills

·         Follow Barratt policy on site safety and behaviour

·         Record and/or report hazards on site

·         Use and maintain hand tools, portable power tools and equipment

·         Organise work and complete within agreed acceptable time limits

·         Use correct protective clothing and equipment

·         Keep a clean and tidy work area and dispose of waste correctly

·         Communicate with other workers/customers politely

·         To attend college achieving 90 per cent attendance rate

·         To complete college work within agreed time limits

·         To be consistent at gathering quality NVQ work based evidence

·         To inform Mentor of any work/college related problems

PERSONAL CHARACTARISTICS / QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

There’s a lot of working outside, helping build homes while learning your trade, so you’ll need to be good with your hands, good with people, and happy to work in all weathers. There’s plenty of studying to be done too, so you’ll need a good all round education and be willing to learn even more. Last but not least, we’ll be looking for plenty of energy, initiative and commitment too.
